A small report from Pixelvärk ’08

With a little bit of a delay we’re presenting this report about what happened at the rest of Pixelvärk. On saturday the 18th Pixelvärk held their main party at the copper tents in Hagaparken (Stockholm). This year’s focus was put on installations. The theme was described as participatory culture, orientalism, dreams and mirages.
Söderbyggd’s performance was a chemistry lesson as art. Maybe higschool science, but that didn’t make it less good. In their little chemistry lab Sönderbyggd had directed their modified speakers towards their lab table where different substances were reacting to the frequencies of their homemade music compositions. The chemical reaction was filmed and blown up on a video screen. The act was performed twice and in between the performances they had a pair of small installations running. One of the installations was a buzzing pile of dirt. Check out Sönderbyggd’s MySpace page for some video clips.

Joyce Ip was showing an analog skeleton animation.

Interacting Arts had made a beduin tent in a Arabian Nights theme where a film was shown and they were offering water pipe and oriental snacks.
The natural but unofficial after party was held at the club Piggly Wiggly (Nordic Light) where Startsladd was VJing and DJ Jethro was spinning. All VJ-material had been produced earlier that day. As a part of the act they were showing a slideshow of images of the club’s guests that had been shot by the entrance.

On the finishing sunday there were lectures at Mejan Labs. Natalie Aubret from the started with a presentation of the live animation program Animata that has been awarded Pixelache Software of the Year. Following was a lecture on participatory culture by Interacting Arts. I must say that I had a negative attitude from the beginning but warmed up during the lecture and the finishing discussion.
Interacting Arts has written the book “Participatory Culture” where they try to define what participatory culture is and is not. To sum it up they claim that most within art that claims to be interactive is only communicating one way. The viewers can often only interact with the art piece in a way that the artist has pre defined and in that way it is not true participation because the viewers can’t or aren’t allowed to alter the piece the way they want.

Video from the VJ jam at 2.35:1 Berns

Finally the video from the VJ jam is done. It was documented with everything from small compact cameras to half working DV cams and professional HD cameras with overly refreshed operators. The quality is a bit flakey but I still want to say a big “thanks” to everybody who took their time to document the event and upload clips. And a big up to all the VJs who participated and made it a successful evening.

Wonderful mapped projections

Joel Dittrich was kidding around in his comments on the Vidiots installation and said that it was looking like Anti VJ’s work (Anti VJ are friends of the Vidiots) who are like the world champions of mapped video. Out of a coincidence I stumbled over this Anti VJ video from the 4th of october when I was surfing for something completely different. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever seen. I just want to quit and take up quilting or something. After about 4 minutes the video gets seriously insane. Seriously…. INSANE!

It’s worth keeping track of Anti VJ’s blog!

More RAM for Macbook (+pro) owners

Today Mac World came with some happy news that Other World Computing (OWC) has succeeded in making 6 GB RAM modules for Macbook and Macbook Pro. The RAM will be delivered as a 4GB and a 2GB module. Mac World describes that the modules are working on all Intel chips of the new “Penryn” model and the old “Santa Rosa” model, but that’s not completely true. As far as I know the chips has been called “Santa Rosa” since the first Mac Book Pro models but it’s only models from june and in some cases november of 2007 that are supported according to OCW. On Macbook it’s only models of “late 2007” that are supported. The cost for the 6 GBs is $480 + shipping (3800 SEK+ shipping according to today’s rates). Right now they have a mail in rebate if you send back your old RAM.

The Vidiots installation at Nordic Light Hotel

Yesterday was the premier of Nordic Lights Hotel’s new bar called Light Factory that is fore most going to be used for events and special parties. For this premier the Vidiots had made a video installation where they projected on four modules in shapes inspired by ice blocks built in white cardboard. The movies showing different light effects were mapped and masked to fit the angular structure of the modules. The installation was only displayed for two days which is shame on this beautiful work. But there has already been talk of showing this installation again.

Before the VJ jam we gave an interview for Metropol – Ute. Participants from the union were: Micke Wehner, Roberto “La Noche” Peyre, Joel “The video artist” Dittrich and our guest from Brazil, Bete Rum. A big thanks to Rasmus Almerud at Metropol who’s spreading the vibe to the people!
